Big Humpty - Manchester
Aptly named due to its large size and dramatic egg shape, Big Humpty is a grandee piece of Manchester's industrial and urban heritage. Carrying the River Medlock beneath its bowels, through the historic Ancoats area, which was a hub of industrial activity during the 19th century.
The river was culverted during this period as part of Manchester's rapid urbanisation, aimed at managing water flow and preventing flooding while allowing for the expansion of infrastructure and development above ground. The name "Big Humpty" derives from its prominent, humpbacked structure that sets it apart from other sections of the culvert system.
This massive engineering feat reflects the industrial ingenuity of the era, designed to support the city's burgeoning population and industrial demands. Over the years, the culvert has been maintained and reinforced to ensure its structural integrity.
