Teffont Quarry - Wiltshire

After spending the morning on the other side of the road in what was a similar place just bigger we decided to head over and check it out. The former quarry resides in the middle of a very active business park with people constantly coming and going. A group who visited a couple weeks prior had an encounter with one of the people on site who knew what they were up to straightaway as there mud covered clothes and helmet were a dead give away, The encounter wasn’t to hostile but it was apparent that entry to the site would be on there radar.

For this reason we decided to approach via a longwinded trek around the site through some farmers fields and a dense forest. Unbeknown to us this would involve scaling a steep cliff and wrestling with some tough brambles, after a lot of faff however we made it to the mine entrance seemingly un detected. The heavy duty door was locked and it appeared to have been reinforced several times over the years, luck seemed to be on our side as in the bottom right hand corner a pile of rivets lay next to a bent over flap on the doors metal sheeting, just enough room for a body to squeeze through in fact.

After some ground level acrobatics we made it inside and began following the left hand route deeper inside. There are alternative access points via adits dotted around and occasionally we could hear what sounded like children laughing and playing near them with gave off an ominous vibe. we explored the system in its entirety getting to see the large circular saw before making our way back out.

History

“A relatively small mine comprising new and old sections. The site has seen numerous name changes over the years and stopped producing limestone in 2010. The markings and stone extraction methods are clearly different in each part of the quarry. A lack of goonish graffiti signals the minimal foot traffic this place see’s. Old machinery has been left behind including a small cutting and dressing station with a large circular saw”.
