Owl Hole - Buxton
Residing off the roadside near the popular hiking spot of chrome hill in the peak district is owl hole. A small, interesting and very pretty hidden gem which was once just an overlooked open depression in the ground. This is also one of Derbyshires largest open potholes.
In the late 1990’s members of the Orpheus caving club took up the challenge of pushing this system which resulting in several new extensions being discovered including the formation rich chamber known as ‘crystal pallas’. The concentration of mineral rich stalactite formations is some of the best in Derbyshire and relatively undisturbed.
Digging has all but since stopped since the last discovery and bellow ‘gour chamber’ there is a syphon system leading to a sump. There is definitely potential for more of this system to be uncovered in the future given the time and effort
