Good Luck Mine - Matlock

History

“Nestled in the picturesque Via Gellia valley near Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, the Good Luck Mine offers a glimpse into the region's lead mining heritage. Opened in 1830 by John Alsop, the mine's optimistic name belied a history of intermittent operation and challenging conditions. Unlike the larger, more prosperous mines of the area, Good Luck remained a relatively small-scale venture, its thin veins of galena proving difficult to extract profitably. Despite the hardships, the mine was worked periodically until its final closure in 1952, after which the entrance was sealed. For decades, Good Luck lay dormant, a forgotten chapter in Derbyshire's industrial past. However, in the 1970s, a dedicated group of enthusiasts formed the Goodluck Mine Preservation Club, determined to resurrect this lost piece of history. Through years of tireless effort, they successfully reopened the mine in 2007, making it accessible to the public. Today, visitors can descend into the depths of Good Luck Mine, exploring the original stonework, examining tools and artifacts left behind by the miners, and gaining a firsthand appreciation for the ingenuity and resilience required to extract lead ore in this challenging environment”.
